EN The Waterfall Circuit Tour Route
This route is within Chapada dos Guimarães National Park in an area where you must be accompanied by a guide. It occurs in the valley of Córrego Independência (Independence Creek) an affluent of the Coxipó River. As the creek cuts through the park, we will encounter numerous waterfalls and spectacular scenery. Over geologic time the creek as cut through the sandstandstone and created a small cavern known as Casa da Pedra (the Stone House).
The adventure begins with a visit to the Véu de Noiva (Bride’s Veil) Waterfall, the principal Postcard in Chapada dos Guimaraes, located 10 km (6 miles) from the city of Chapada beside the administrative headquarters of the park. After this, a trek of approximately 7 km (4.6 miles) round trip, begins on a old service road continued by easy and moderate level trails. After about 40 minutes of hiking we reach the Cachoeira das Andorinhas (Waterfall of the Swallows), where can bathe and rest a little before continuing on the journey.
After our swim, we depart upstream. The next stop is the Cachoeira da Prainha (Waterfall with the little beach), another delightful place to stop and take a swim. Just above is the Cachoeira do Degrau (Step Waterfall) where we can have a natural hydro-massage. Later, we will discover the Cachoeira do Pulo (Leaping Waterfall) where the stream follows a serpentine course through the rocky crevices until we reach a cataract of approximately 3.5 meters (12 feet) unveiling one the most majestic attractions in the Park.
On the trail once again, we will arrive at the Cachoeira Sete de Setembro (September 7th – Independence Day – Waterfall), our last before returning through the scrublands in the direction of the Casa da Pedra (Stone House), a small sandstone cavern carved out by the Independence Creek. Legend has it that this places served as a shelter for the Prestes Column during the military uprisings of the 1920s, as well as for fugitive slaves. Nowadays it is inhabited by bats and other small animals that use it for shelter.
What to Bring?
Because access to the Waterfall Circuit is by a series of trails through the scrublands, much of which has little or no shade we make the following recommendations:
- Footwear that is adequate for wilderness trails.
- A Sun hat & Sunscreen.
- Drinking Water.
- Snacks.
- Insect Repellent.
- A Bathing Suit.
- Binoculars.
- A Camera, preferably with both Macro and Telephoto Lenses.
- A Day Pack
Reservations
This trip is offered daily. Advanced reservations are required. Because our tours are accompanied by a bilingual guide authorized by the park, we generally offer private trips which can be combined with other attractions and lodging to create a tailor-made tour. You can request a public trip that is open to other participants, in which case the price will be reduced according to the number of persons. The maximum group size is eight with any one guide. The trip includes transportation from the city to the park & back and light refreshment. Special arrangements can be made if you are arriving in Cuiabá on the morning of the trip and need transportation to Chapada dos Guimaraes. Participants should carry their own water or other beverages. Alcohol is not allowed inside the park. Contact us for availability and current prices or with any other questions.
